A Message from the President & CEO

Thomas K. Sims, PhD

An Albuquerque Jewel

I was having lunch recently with some community leaders, one of whom called Samaritan Counseling Center a jewel in our community.

And it is, isn't it?

Samaritan is looking forward to its twenty-fifth anniversary next year, all that time helping people find wholeness and healing through professional psychological counseling and education which integrate medical and spiritual resources. Samaritan has been doing it quietly and effectively with the help of so many people over the years: dedicated staff and a multitude of volunteers who make it work.  Samaritan works because it is local and grassroots. With the generous support of people in our community, Samaritan continues to provide a place of wholeness and healing. It is as simple as people helping people.

Like the story of our namesake, the Samaritan, you see someone in trouble and you help them, no questions asked.  Rich or poor, insured or not, valley or heights or west mesa or downtown, believer or non-believer, big trouble or small trouble. While health care debates and economic forces rage around us, and other programs face closures or limit there services, the community of Albuquerque makes sure that there is a Samaritan Counseling Center that will be there for people in need, in good times or in bad.

In my job, I have had the honor to meet many individuals and couples from the community who generously donate time and funds to Samaritan. I have met leaders and members of churches and faith communities who come together to make Samaritan a source of help and respect for their congregations.  I have had the good fortune to work with people from the United Way of Central New Mexico, the staff of Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque just to name a few.  The business community of Albuquerque and the University Of New Mexico Anderson School Of Business all help us to make integrity and ethics a central theme in our community through their work on the annual Samaritan Counseling Center Ethics in Business Award event. These, and many others, are people who make sure that Samaritan is there for all of us.

Yours Truly,

Thomas K. Sims, PhD

President and CEO

Impact:
Find Wholeness and Healing

Positive Effects - Data gathered from past clients shows that symptoms were reduced by more than 70% after receiving counseling. 90% of clients surveyed reported that the service they received made a positive difference in their lives and over 90% believed they were helped to accomplish what they had set out to do.

Healing Community - Since its inception, SJCCF has served more than 600 families with mental health counseling, related services and education about community resources.  Services have grown each year, from 61 families in 2005 to 241 families in 2010.

Samaritan Honored to be Recipient of the

Tickets are $125 each or $1,250 for a table of 10 and can be purchased online at the Gala website: www.mayorscharitygala.com.  Please come to the gala to show your support for Samaritan Counseling Center.

Thank you to Bernalillo County
for Recent Funding

Recently awarded $25,000 from Bernalillo County, Samaritan Counseling Center's St. Joseph Center for Children and Families (SJCCF) provides services to families who may not be able to access the help they need elsewhere. SJCCF provides mental health counseling and resources for persons throughout Bernalillo County and with a focus on the La Mesa and Trumbull Village neighborhoods in the International District of Albuquerque. Although SJCCF is rooted in the International District, 54% of clients commute from the SW quadrant of Albuquerque, due to the scarcity of behavioral health service providers in Southern Bernalillo County for people of all ages who are poor, uninsured and Spanish-speaking. SJCCF provides individual, couple, and family counseling, case management referrals, and home visits, as well as infant mental health services for families with infants and very young children. All staff members are bilingual in Spanish and English, and all services are available in Spanish.

Samaritan Bids Farewell to Long-Time Board Member Heidi Hurd

Dear Samaritan Family,

As is true with so many things in life, the more you give, the more you receive. One of the most satisfying ways one can give back to one's community is by joining a non profit board. Samaritan Counseling Center is fortunate to have many dedicated persons on its board, and I feel privileged to have served with them over the years.  While many think that being a board member is only about important fiduciary, governance and employment responsibilities, there is so much more to becoming involved in a non-profit board. Matching your interests and skills with the needs of a non-profit, not only brings you into the mission of the organization, but furthers your sense of community involvement and contribution.

I encourage you to find a place where you can serve both Samaritan and bring yourself a sense of fulfillment . When this happens we all win.

Sincerely,

Heidi Frost-Heard

Former Samaritan Board Member
